India known as the land of mysticism and philosophy was the origin of some religions that still survive today in the world.
The main religion in India today is Hinduism. Approximately 80% of Indians are Hindus. Hinduism is a faith of colors with a large arcade of gods and goddesses. Hinduism is one of the prehistoric religions of the world. It is assumed to have developed about 5000 years ago. Later in the ancient period other religions developed in India.
Around 500 BC two other religions developed in India, namely Buddhism and Jainism. Today, only about 0.5% of Indians are Jains and about 0.7% are Buddhists. In older times Jainism and Buddhism in general were very much admired in India. Indians who agreed to Buddhist viewpoint spread not only in the Indian subcontinent, but also in eastern and southern kingdoms of India.
In 'modern' period some more religions were also established in India.
In 15 th century a relatively new religion in India was established – Sikhism. Approximately 2% of Indians are Sikhs.
With religions that have developed in India, there are followers of non-Indian religions.
The largest non-Indian religion is Islam. They are about 12% of the population of India. Christians are more than 2% of the population of India. There are also Zoroastrians who even though make less than 0.01% of India's populations are known in India. There are also a few thousand Jews in India.
